DEFINITION OF DISPERSION

After getting the idea of central value of the quantitative data as discussed in the previousĀ chapter, it is observed that in some cases the values are very close around the central value and inĀ other cases the values are scattered a little wide around the central value. The measure which gives the idea of the amount of scattering of the data around the central value is called the measure of dispersion.

There are four co~only used measures of dispersion viz. Standard Deviation (S.D.), Mean Deviation (M.D.), Quartile Deviation (Q.D.) and Range (R). Below we shall discuss these different measures.
