Sampling, Population and Samples

Sampling means the selection of a part of the aggregate with a view to draw some statistical information about the whole. This aggregate of the investigation is called population and the selected part is called sample. A population is finite or infinite according to its size i.e., number of members.

The main objective of the sampling is to obtain the maximum info1mation of the population. The analysis of the sample is done to obtain an idea of the probability distribution of the variable in the population.

Though by applying proper process of sampling we may not be able to represent the characteristics of the population correctly. This discrepancy is called sampling error.
